Automotive Repair: Tips On Choosing A Good Body Shop

by Peter Joseph on Jul.29, 2010, under Truck News

Even if you are the most careful driver on the planet, accidents may be unavoidable. It may not be your fault. It could be another driver or unexpected weather or road conditions. When you do need to have work done on the body of your automobile, finding the best body shop is an important consideration. The right shop means the work will be done so well there will be no clue three was ever a problem. Below are a few tips on how to find the best body shop in your area.

When your vehicle is still in driving condition:

Getting a number of estimates if going to be your first step to finding a good shop. Drive to some of the more reputable body shops in your area and ask for an estimate on both cost and repair time. If you were in an accident this is required by your insurance company but if you are going to pay for the repair yourself or the upgrade to your vehicle, get at least three estimates so you can compare the service, repair time and pricing. The estimates are free.

This is the real start of your search for the best body shop. You can begin by comparing the quality and type of quoted materials in each estimate. You may find that an estimate that is a lot cheaper actually lists materials that are of a lower quality. This is a poor choice of both estimate and body shop. Make sure you know where the replacement parts are coming from as some shops will use junk-yard parts instead of new factory-made parts.

When your vehicle is not in driving condition:

Ideally you will have an insurance quote and a repairs list should you be int his situation. Getting a quote based on your list is as easy as faxing or visiting your local body shops.

When you have a quote on the parts list be sure you know where they will be getting their parts, either new from the manufacturer or from the local junk yard. When repainting is part of the repair it is important to be sure how much of the vehicle will be repainted for the quoted price. In some cases you may be given an estimate based on repainting only the spot repaired whereas in others it may be for the entire panel. Matching paint colors is an important consideration.

Before you decide:

Choosing the right body shop is an incredibly important decision as body repairs can be very expensive. As for all big investments a call to the Better Business Bureau and or the local Chamber of Commerce is an important consideration. If there have been recorded complaints you probably need to reconsider your choice.

Price is not the sole factor in choosing the best body shop to repair your vehicle. It is about their reputation for quality work, delivery time and quality of parts used. By finding a body shop that provides quality workmanship at a reasonable price with a reasonable repair time, you can be assured that you have chosen the best body shop.

Auto Industry Update

by Emma Watson on Jul.29, 2010, under Truck News

GM should also overcome history. Dating 1960s, its executives viewed little cars as money-losers because they have low costs, high U.S. labour fees and American drivers’ hunger for larger cars fuelled by low cost gas.

“They actually haven’t spent time or cash on these automobiles,” mentioned David Champion, senior director of Customer Reports’ auto testing department. The Cobalt, introduced in 2004, “came out trying to be competitive in that market place but usually languished behind.”

That has to change if the Cruze would be to assist save GM, specially at south america car sale ( venta de automotores).

Champion stated the vehicle have to be as dependable as the Corolla or Honda Civic, the top-selling U.S. compacts. But dependability has been a issue. Customer Reports gave its coveted Suggested Acquire rating to only seven of 30 GM models in its April issue, mainly since of spotty reliability. No GM compact cars got the label.

Last month, on the final drive to check for challenges ahead of full-scale Cruze production starts, GM engineers had been candid having a reporter about past compacts, saying they had been mediocre mainly because GM put controlling fees just before all else.

As a result, GM missed the small-car boom last decade. Compacts and subcompacts grew from 21 per cent from the U.S. industry five years ago to 33 per cent now. J.D. Power & Associates predicts that may rise to 35 per cent by 2013. And little cars are a lot more important overseas.

Yet GM drew only eight percent of its U.S. sales from modest cars last year, compared with more than 20 per cent for Toyota and Honda.

Once the Cobalt was in development inside early 2000s, GM set out just to make it competitive, not just a market place leader, mentioned Wayne McConnell, a GM engineer in charge of vehicle performance. Ambitious sales targets and offers to attract new buyers have been changed after cost estimates have been tallied.

The Reason Why To Choose Custom Car Parts

by Jeffrey Greigoriel on Jul.29, 2010, under Truck News

People love to personalize things and that particularly goes for their cars. The idea of custom car parts is not new but with the rising amount of TV shows dedicated to personalizing cars there is an explosion in the interest in custom car parts.

Some people select subtle custom car parts like decals and accessories while other persons become hardcore custom car parts fanatics and start changing around engines and other parts of the car that can increase performance as well as make the car look more like a customized vehicle. Several custom car parts have even been outlawed in a few states while others are just plain dangerous.

For a time people were putting lights in their radiator grills that looked a lot like the lights that are installed in police cars. These kinds of custom car parts have been outlawed. Many people love to install nitrous in their cars to soup up performance and these custom car parts are known to kill people. But with custom car parts, it is not always about the new products.

Just as much as modern car parts have been increasing in popularity therefore have custom car parts for antique vehicles as well. A big industry has grown up around the community of individuals who take older vintage vehicles and fix them up for show, to race them, or just to have them in their collection. As this community of antique auto enthusiasts grows the custom car parts makers out to support them grows too.

Is It Ever Too Much?

Most states and communities have laws about custom car parts. In some cases, several communities can invoke local noise ordinances to keep people from increasing the volume of their exhaust pipes or from blasting a stereo which is obviously much too loud for the vehicle it is in. Always check to ensure that any modifications which you end up installing are not going to make your vehicle illegal or in any way not able to be driven on public roads.

It is great to have a custom car parts and vehicle but if you have no way of showing it off and then what is the point of doing it? Everyone likes to make a personal statement and many persons make their statement with the vehicle which they are seen in every day. Whatever your preference is that always make sure that what you are doing is legal and safe.

After purchasing parts for your car, it is your time to think about purchasing cordless radar detectors and motorcycle radar detector. Both of these kinds of radar detector are good to be set up in your motorcycle.

Making The Streets Safe And Free From Worry With Defensive Driving

by Leroy Tobin on Jul.28, 2010, under Truck News

You can save lives and enhance your driving experience by using defensive driving techniques when you are on the road. Getting upset and speeding through traffic won’t get you there any faster. In fact it may not get you there at all.

You won’t see people who are careless on the road practicing their defensive driving skills but if you are practicing yours you can avoid them. The need for driving defensively is at an all time high these days as more and more people are reckless on the road and do not watch out for other drivers in their rush to get where they are going. It is rude but it is a fact that it is increasing. Until everyone learns it is not all about them and shares the road we are forced to watch for these kinds of drivers.

The standard for Safe Practices of Motor Vehicles defines defensive driving as, “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.” The old adage your mother used to tell you that if your friends jumped off a bridge would you to also applies to driving. Just because you see a reckless driver speeding down the road does not mean you go there too.

This is where police officers come in. You ever said to yourself, “Where is a cop when you need one.” Well that is what they are there for. People that do not drive defensively and following the laws of the road will eventually be found. That is why it is so important to be a defensive driver because not everyone else is and you have to watch out for them.

For the new driver a defensive driving course is included in the training a person will receive. They will learn to be precautionary with others on the road and anticipate others actions to avoid accidents. A good driving school will not only talk about defensive driving with their students but they will reinforce it what the students is actually behind the wheel.

If you have an accident or get a speeding violation a judge may require you take a course in defensive driving. This is good because you can get some training you should have had before. There are different schools you can go to, like traffic school, to complete the course and bring back to the judge to get your license back.

If you are teaching your teenager to drive, or anyone for that matter, you want to ensure that you are teaching them how to be a defensive driver and why. You can also exhibit this to younger children while they are in your care to explain to them why being a good driver who is defensive is a good thing. This way by the time they become drivers it has been ingrained in them that being aware of the road is a good thing.

To make the road safe for everyone on it you must do your part in practicing defensive driving. You can be sure that you are important in this battle to have the roads of America safer. By teaching our children the importance of it perhaps there will be less crazy drivers out there endangering everyone’s lives.

Learn how defensive driving may save your life, and save you money. Consider the different courses that may be offered in your location. Head to http://www.funandsafedriving.com/defensive-driving.html and learn more now!

Does It Really Save Money To Change Your Own Oil?

by Sarah Kelvin on Jul.28, 2010, under Truck News

When you think of automotive maintenance, your first thought is probably washing and waxing your car and the next is probably changing the oil and filter. Changing your own oil is not only easy, it is one of those tasks that is considered to be a very acceptable weekend DIY project. But do you really save money by doing it yourself?

What are the costs involved?

In most cases, changing your own oil and filter seems to be fairly cheap. Oil itself is under two dollars per quart, and an oil filter is usually under five dollars. You will also need a number of accessories prior to getting started. You will need a drip pan, funnel and a wrench designed for removing the oil filer. You should be able to change the oil and oil filter in about half an hour. It then costs another couple of dollars to discard the filter and oil oil. The first change will probably end up being a wash money wise.

Why should you pay to have your oil changed?

Paying to have your oil and filter changed will vary depending on the garage and if you have a coupon. It can be anywhere between twenty and forty dollars. Most mechanics will also check for any potential problems as well as washing your windows and filling your windshield washer tank rather than simply changing your oil and filter as instructed. If you are not a mechanic this may prove to be well worth the money you spend on paying to have your oil changed. Often a mechanic can spot things before they become real problems.

When should you change your oil and filter?

There are varying opinions regarding the frequency of oil changes. For the most part mechanics recommend that you have your car serviced and oil changed every 3,000 miles. However, in the case of some newer model vehicles, manufacturers actually recommend 6,000 miles. The oil filter is not necessarily recommended to be changed with every oil change but with every other change.

In many cases, mechanics will still recommend that you change your filter whenever you change your oil. When you leave a dirty filter in your vehicle, this leaves a full quart of old oil in your engine which will remain until the next time you change your filter. This is of course, dirty oil that is left and how can you logically expect an engine to function as efficiently as it does with all clean oil?

In fact, there is no reason not to change your oil and filter more often. Clean oil and a clean oil filter will help to keep your car running more efficiently which will save you money in the long run by avoiding repairs and saving on gas consumption. With all of this in mind, is there really any benefit in changing your own oil and filter after 6,000 miles? Or is it more cost effective in the long run to allow a mechanic to service your vehicle on a regular basis.

Vehicle Maintenance: Understanding Drive Belts

by Howard Martin on Jul.27, 2010, under Truck News

The shafts in an automobile engine are driven to the motion of a rotary by using a series of pulleys connected by belts. The motion of the rotary is where or how the engine gets its power to various accessories that are mounted to the engine. Accessories such as pumps, exhaust fans and air compressors are crucial to the operation of the vehicle.

Types of belts:

The belts used to provide high-traction type power and fits into a groove shaped like a V are called V-belts. Another belt that provides high-traction power is the Poly-V belt. This belt is flat on the outside but has many V-shaped grooves on the inside. A drive belt that is similar to these V-belts but are open-ended belts that do not require meal clamps are called V-Link belts. The V-Link belt is used only when other belts cannot reach or fit. They have a small load capacity and are costly items.

Belts that are lighter in weight and can function at high speeds are called Flat belts. There is little traction with these belts so they do tend to slip. One of the most important type of belts is the Timing belt which does not need friction and does not have teeth like other drive belts. They have a small capacity for power compared to the other types of belts.

What do drive belts do?

Drive belts do just what their name implies; they drive different components of the vehicle. A vehicle with a broken belt can be rendered completely immobile although the belts themselves are quite inexpensive. Without the belt to drive the vehicle component, there can be no motion or function from that component. One of the many accessories to rely on a drive belt is the water pump. The water pump is designed to circulates water through the vehicle’s system, thus keeping it cool. If the water pump stops working, which happens instantly when the drive belt breaks, it takes only a short time for the engine to overheat. The serpentine belt drives several components of the vehicle so if this one breaks, many functioning parts are immediately affected.

What makes drive belts break?

These belts are made of rubber and are not very expensive. Wear and tear is a normal part of use. Over time the rubber of the drive belt may harden, dry out, or even crack. This aging process can have an effect on the strength of the drive belt. As the strength wanes, it becomes more and more likely that the belt will break.

How hard is it to replace a drive belt?

Some belts are pretty easy to replace if you have a basic knowledge of the vehicle’s engine and its components. Serpentine belts, however, are more complicated. It may be best to let a mechanic replace these. In most cases the serpentine belt will only need to be changed every thirty-five thousand miles. Both the serpentine belt and the timing belt can last up to sixty thousand miles.

by Dylan Nelson on Jul.26, 2010, under Truck News

Today, as more and more custom vehicles are being produced so goes will their exhaust systems. But what about the typical car with factory installed muffler? This is where the aftermarket mufflers come into play — for individuals who understand what these mufflers can do.

With aftermarket muffler’s characteristic of producing loud sounds, people who love to use them are often branded as attention seekers and noise polluters. May be this was a valid assessment but the primary reason for using these types of mufflers is not to get attention and definitely not to be a contributor to noise pollution.

The primary reason for installing these types of muffler is to get more horsepower out of your engine. When connected to the best exhaust system, it will bring more muscle to your vehicle. The principle behind the aftermarket muffler is to remove the choking barriers that limit the vehicle’s power.

Getting the right kind of aftermarket muffler will not be difficult. T here are good names in the industry to choose from like Magnaflow, MimoUSA, and Monza for starters. The right muffler for you really depends on what you want to achieve by changing your exhaust system.

Anyone who changes a part or the whole exhaust system of their vehicle has various motives. For example, if you just want reverberating sound for showing-off you might want to get the Magnaflow Satin Stainless Oval mufflers, while a serious racer might opt for the Magnaflow Stainless Steel Race Series muffler.

Most car racing organization often imposes a maximum noise level in their venues. The Magnaflow Race Series mufflers were made to meet these requirements. While this is the case for the Race Series, a street racer might want a more appropriate muffler for his game.

The Magnaflow Street Series mufflers are for the serious street racers. “The Fast and The Furious” will come to mind when one sees these types of muffler with their deep roar and superb performance coming along.

People who understand what a real power is will mostly opt for a new complete exhaust system. In this category, Monza comes out as one of the best. They have several designs such as the Pacesetter Performance Exhaust System that can really improve the vehicle’s power and it attaches without much difficulty to the catalytic converter.

Having a definite reason for changing your vehicle’s exhaust system will help you decide what type of aftermarket muffler or exhaust system you will buy. And whatever reason that is, get ready to handle the extra power it brings and perhaps the extra tickets you will get.
