Mosquito Prevention Methods
Mosquitoes are a transmitter agent that carries disease-causing viruses and parasites from person to person without getting the disease themselves. They are vectors of fatal diseases such as dengue, malaria, etc. Both male and female mosquitoes are nectar eaters, but the females of many species are also able of drinking blood. Females do not take blood for their own survival, but they do need additional substances such as protein and iron to produce eggs. Through drinking blood from one animal to another, they transmit detrimental bacteria.
There are many methods used for mosquito control, but first we should have knowledge on their life cycle. Mosquitoes go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult or imago. Adult females lay eggs in stagnant water like salt-marsh, lake, and even in plastic pail. The first three stages are underwater and last 5-14 days, depending on the species and the surrounding temperature; eggs hatch to become larvae, then pupae. The adult mosquito comes out from the pupa as it floats at the water surface. Adult females can live up to a month – more in captivity – but most likely do not survive more than 1-2 weeks in nature.
Now, we know that mosquitoes prefer stagnant water and dark places for them to flourish. So keep your house clean and free from stagnant water that will be formed. Make your that your pipelines have no leakages and the drainage system is clean and free-flowing.
In places near bodies of water like pond, remove all floating rubbles and other solid waste material from the water. Solid garbages provide productive area for mosquitoes so make sure that they are cleaned. It is also useful to breed mosquito-eating fish in water to help control mosquitoes.
You can also use insecticides and mosquito repellents in case the mosquito problem is too extensive. You can also demand your local municipality to undertake mosquito prevention programme in your area.
