The Devastating Effects Of The Flood In Pakistan
By now, everyone has heard about the devastating floods that have ravaged the country of Pakistan. It is all over the news and people can get a glimpse of the horrible state of affairs the people of Pakistan find themselves in. The flooding has not stopped, as rain continues to pour down over the country making relief efforts very hard. The floods are spreading to all districts of Pakistan with over 17 million people being affected so far. Nearly half of that total need emergency help. 1504 people have died from the flooding and many more people have been badly injured.
ActionAid have many people in Pakistan. They are witnessing the affect this disaster is having on the people. Zakaria Nutkani is a communications officer for ActionAid in Pakistan and he makes the following observation “Children are hungry and malnourished. Women cry as they share their stories of horror and destruction. Some of them have lost sleep after losing their homes. I can see nothing but trauma and tragedy everywhere”.
The flood disaster first hit over 3 months ago. During that time ActionAid has managed to reach and help over 40,000 people but there is still plenty more to do. The target for ActionAid is to help over 120,000 in the 8 badly affected areas. ActionAid have been the first charity organisation to bring relief to the community of Bishigram. We specialise in bringing in clean water to communities. We have brought in water to help the families in Madain, in addition to the other relief goods that were shipped in.
The Pakistan people are in dire need. There are 5 main concerns for them. Primarily, there is a need to make sure that the people have access to life saving materials, especially the women and children that are affected. There is a large shortage of food and clean water to be found in the stricken regions. Over 40% of the population do not have access to vital health services. Many diseases are on the rise and this trend needs to be reversed. Lastly, the stocks of food that were being kept in communities are now wiped away and only 4 – 5 days of food are left.
Pakistan cannot survive much longer without the help of the international community. Thousands more people will die from spreading diseases, malnourishment, and thirst.
